Get started. What is VIES? VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is a search engine (not a database) owned by the European Commission. The data is retrieved from national VAT databases when a search is made from the VIES tool. You can verify the validity of a VAT number issued by any Member State / Northern Ireland by selecting that Member State / Northern Ireland from the drop-down menu provided, and entering the number to be validated.
