Ever since he came to prominence in czarist Russia of the 1830s, various groups and critics have recruited him as a foot-soldier for their own particular battles, and he has proven most useful for these extra-literary machinations.

T hough he wrote in Russian, Gogol was born in a small village in the district of Poltava, in what is now central Ukraine.
